BREAKING: There was No Pelican

In what seems like an uncanny, unpossible chance of coincidence, there were some guys driving parallel to and videotaping the Bugatti when it crashed into the salty marsh.   From the video, it’s clear that the guys recognized the Veyron as being an exotic car, although they weren’t sure what kind it was.  As they were admiring the ulimate super car,  the Bugatti all of a sudden veers to the right and hits the drink!  The driver reported to the authorities that he swerved to miss a low-flying pelican, but I don’t see a pelican, do you?

Bugatti Veyron Misses Hitting a Pelican?

Bugatti Veyron Misses Hitting a Pelican?

But before we reserve judgment, lets review some freeze frames.  You can see there is a small white smudge in front of the Veyron, which could potentially be a Pelican.  However, the original report stated that the driver swerved to miss a low-flying Pelican… this smudge ain’t flying.  Even if the bird wasn’t flying, if a car came so close to it that the driver had to swerve to miss it, you would think that the bird would be startled enough to fly up in the air, at least a few feet, in an act of self preservation.  There are some strange details to the drivers story, but in a grassy-knoll kinda way, I’m not buying the idea that the white smudge is a pelican.

The sleuths over at AutoBlog did some digging around and discovered that the person driving the 16/4 was none other than Andy House, the owner-operator of Performance Auto Sales, the “leader in Exotic Salvage Restoration”.  So far, this doesn’t look good for Andy as it sounds like it was nothing more than a publicity stunt.  Although this notion is unconfirmed, but it is an unthinkable atrocity to crash an exotic car as rare as the Bugatti Veyron for some kind of business gain.  Sounds pretty bad, huh?

Here’s the crash video.  WARNING: EXPLICIT LANGUAGE, NSFW.

DIY Ferrari 458: It will seriously take you hours…

Ferrari 458 Italia - Exterior

It’s always been known that both Porsche and Ferrari make a majority of their profits from the custom work they put into their cars. The typical purchaser gets to choose the color of the paint, brake calipers, leather interior, stitching, tach color, etc.  Sounds like a lot, but maybe not overwhelming… guess again.

More Details on the Bugatti Galibier 16C

Bugatti Galibier C16

The Galibier isn’t expected to hit the market until 2013, but with an 8-liter W16 engine and $1.5 million dollar price tag, people are already waiting inline for it. A few new details were released today; the W16 is going to be tuned down to around 800 horsepower and the top speed will be limited to around 220 MPH.  Even though this is 30+ MPH less than the Bugatti Veyron, it is still light years ahead of any other 4-door car in the world.  There is also speculation that the 16C will share the same platform as the Bentley Mulsanne.  Stay tuned, more details as they become available!

Ferrari 458 Italia Rocks Our Socks… and then some.

Ferrari 458 Italia Engine

Ferrari is the company that seems to be always teasing.  They tease those who can’t afford their cars, and they tease those who can.  Watch and listen as a pair of 458’s scream around the track at break-neck speeds.

MotorTrend Reviews 10 Hot Cars, Picks the Best One for the Serious Driver

It’s a top-tier shootout between the Porsche Caymen PDK, the Audi R8, the BMW 135i, the Cadillac CTS-V, the Camaro SS, the Corvette ZR1, the Ford Shelby GT500, the Jaguar XFR, the Mazda Miata and Nissan Nismo 370Z. If you want to know what MT thinks is the best sports car out there, check out this 14+ minute video.

  • The engine is now front-mounted and can be run on Ethanol
  • Insane hood with twin-fin mechanisms to display the engine

We’ll keep our ear the ground, check back later for more details!

Porsche Releases Details: 2010 Porsche 911 GT3

2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS - Rear Shot

Hot on the release of the 2010 Porsche 911 is the GT3 RS. This super-tuned version of the GT3 gets the same upgraded 3.8-liter flat-six engine that the 911 inherited from the Carrera, but this version is sans-turbos. Either way, power output is pegged at 450HP, more than enough to make the RS leave blurred streaks of neon through the air. A wider track, custom suspension and light weight body work improve grip, handling and general sex appeal.  Full gallery below, but there’s two track videos after the jump!

Unveiled: 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo

2010 Porsche 911 Turbo - Yellow

Out with the old, in with the new. Although Porsche hasn’t made any real changes to the exterior, it’s whats under the hood (boot?) that counts.  And Porsche delivered for 2010; gone is the peppy 3.6-liter, replaced by the Carrera’s beefier 3.8-liter flat-six.  Not only does the new engine have 5.5% more displacement, but it also features direct-injection, which gives a bump to power and fuel economy. What also gives a bump to power? The twin set of variable-geometry turbines they mounted to the boxer.

Power output has been raised to an incredible 500 ponies, and if you can keep your lead foot in check, you can also expect an EPA-estimated 24.1 MPG with the 6-speed tranny.  If you want to go for the 7-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (aka: dual-clutch) system, you get bumped up to an environmentally-friendly 24.8 MPG.  Being green never felt soooo good.  :)

2010 Porsche 911 Turbo - Gunmetal Cabriolet

What else is new? A refined Porsche Traction Management System (PTMS), a more rear-wheel-biased Porsche Stability Management (PSM) and an optional set of super expensive, super light RS Spyder Rims. The Coupe runs $132,800, but you can expect to pay another $11,000 if you want to sport the convertible.  All this amounts to quite an upgrade for the 911, probably Porsche’s way of pushing back on the GT-R.  Check out the full photo gallery after the jump.

Mercedes SLS AMG Runs the ‘Ring

2010 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG

A car that has been largely shrouded in secrecy has just been put to the test on the Nurburgring. The SLS AMG is the next generation of the SLR, featuring aggressive styling cues, gull wing doors, and a brute of an engine. Listen to it roar as it roams the ‘Ring for the full 13 miles. Keep in mind this isn’t the “official” time, this was a preview day. The final production car with a more experienced ‘Ring driver and no co-pilot should yield much faster results.

Super Car Showdown: Bugatti Veyron vs. McLaren F1

Bugatti Veyron vs Mclaren F1
The production crew over at Top Gear has outdone themselves once again. This could be called the ultimate drag race. A showdown of Goliath and Goliath. In the right lane, we have a McLaren F1, the former champion of all things speed. In the 1990’s, the F1 broke the world record for the fastest production car by hitting 242 MPH. 15 years later, the Bugatti Veyron became the new heavy-weight champion, breaking the 250 MPH barrier and setting the record at 252 MPH. Although SSC’s Ultimate Aero and the Porsche 9ff GT9 claim faster speeds than the Veyron, neither of them are as refined or polished as the Veyron. If I were to choose one of these, the Veyron would most certainly be my choice.

Hennessey Gets Gozilla Drunk Off it’s Own Power, Run’s High 10’s

Hennessey GTR700 - Nissan GT-R
The Hennessey tuning shop is known for making Big power come out of monstrous engines.  From their 1,000+ horsepower twin-turbo Dodge Vipers to their track-demolishing Corvettes, John knows his muscle cars.  But that’s why his work on the GT-R is special; it’s not the traditional naturally-aspirated V8 muscle that’s capable of producing gobs of torque and astronomical amounts of horsepower.  Rather, the GT-R is a highly tuned and balanced V6 that makes lots of horsepower per liter, making it super quick around the track.  But like what many tuners in this world have asked; what would happen if we gave Godzilla even more power?

Wallpaper of the Week: Aston Martin One-77 Cutaway

Aston Martin One-77 - Geneva Auto Show - Front

Aston Martin has vowed to make a super car that makes all others tremble. For months they’ve been providing teasers of how the car will look, showing little pieces of it to the press. Well this week was the Geneva Motor show and the One-77 is now known to the world. It is, in the tradition of all Aston Martin’s, beautiful, elegant and powerful. AutoBlog has done a great write up on the beast and they took lots of pictures. To quickly sum up the One-77, it’s got:

  • A 7.3-liter V8 producing around 750 Horsepower
  • Aluminum and Carbon Fiber Chassis
  • Carbon fiber body panels and ducts
  • Expected curb weight of 3,300 pounds
  • Low 3.0 second 0-60, 200+ MPH

Pagani Zonda R Runs the Monza Track, Sounds Even Better than it Looks!

Pagani Zonda R at the Monza Race Track

The Zonda R is Pagani’s new hot racer. It’s really a track car, so it should be expected that this thing has functional styling and a mean motor, but I never would have thought that it sounded as goooood as this.  The track that the Zonda is running on, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, is located near Monza, Italy, just north of Milan. Make sure you’re in a place where you can listen to this video at some decent volume, you won’t be disappointed.  :)

Wallpaper of the Week – Pagani Zonda R

This is the latest from Pagani. It’s been in development for two years. It is both longer and wider than its predecessor, yet thanks to its carbon-monocoque body, it weighs almost 300 pounds less. It’s also more powerful than the F; using a Mercedes-Benz sourced 6-liter V12 engine, Pagani says the R has 750 horses at its disposal, which is more that 150 more horsepower than the F.

This is a recipe for pure insanity! The Zonda F can run the ‘Ring in 7:27, one of the fastest times ever recorded by a road car. Although that may be the catch; in the Zonda F, you could take it out on the street and pick up some groceries if you had to. The R, on the other hand, is anything but street legal. It is a race-bred machine. So if you ever see 1 of the 10 that Pagani is making, it’s likely to be in a garage, museum, on the track, or according to the press release, in someone’s living room.

Enjoy the pics, the press release is after the jump.

Edit: Updated with bigger, better pics!

Wallpaper of the Week: 700 Horsepower Lightning GT EV

Lightning GT - Passenger Side

Lightning GT - Passenger Side

This weeks WOTW features a hot Electric Vehicle from the UK. It’s got 700 horsepower, making 0-60 achievable in four seconds flat.  And it’s not just fast; it can go 200 miles on a 10 minute charge… not too bad, eh?  Since it’s a all electric, it costs about 12 times less to power than gasoline, not to mention the tax incentives. The Lightning GT will be available for purchase in the UK sometime in 2009 for a price tag of £120,000, which is about $171,000 USD. The Lightning GT will be available to the rest of Europe and the US at a later date, but as of right now, there is no time frame for making a left-hand drive version.

Hennessey Works on the ZR1, Run’s 11 Second Quarter

Hennessey ZR700 Corvette

Hennessey is known for creating muscle cars that have so much power, they could make the earth spin underneath them. They have not deviated from their path to madness in their latest creation, the ZR700.  Here’s the basic formula; take a limited edition 640HP ZR1 Corvette, add more boost, a bigger intercooler, a K&N intake, stainless steel headers, high flow catalytic converters and an electronic tune to boost up horsepower to 705 at the crank.

New Wallpaper(s) of the Week!

This week it’s more than just one wallpaper, it’s a whole gallery!  Last week I posted up the classic photo of the Bugatti Veyron running down the Salt Flats, but this week I bring you something fresh.  For the time being, it’s a car that only Japan is privy to enjoy.  It’s the latest GT-R Spec V.  Nissan just released the details, which I’ll post up soon, but they also sent out a huge collection of photos.  If you follow this blog at all, you’ll know I’m a big fan of the GT-R, so I wanted to get them posted up here ASAP so you could enjoy them.  What better post than the second WOTW?  :)

Nissan GT-R Demo’s Traqmate, Pulls Some Serious G’s

Anyone who doubted the GT-R’s supremacy on the track can take a look at this video.  It was taken on December 29, 2009 during the GT-R track day at Buttonwillow Raceway.  GT-R owner and driver Gary Sheehan takes his Datsun around the raceway hiting up to 1.3 G’s in the turn’s, with a sustained 1.1 G on the back hairpin.  He’s using Traqmate, a track  analysis tool that lets you record your laps with all the metrics that make a real gearhead drool.  Enjoy this video as Gary burns some rubber in a blisteringly fast lap.
