Rumor: Next Gen Corvette to Bring Back Split Window Design

1963 Corvette Split Window

One of the most iconic designs in the Corvette’s history is the split window design from the 1963 model year. Yes, it hinders the drivers vision out the rear window, but it provides a beautiful swatch of metal to paint in an area usually reserved for glass. In 1964, the split window design got the axe, ultimately replaced by a huge sheet of glass. Well next year is the Corvette’s centennial anniversary, and GM is considering bringing back the split rear window style. As I see it, there are a couple pros and cons to this:

Pros

  1. Elegant exterior styling (duh!)
  2. Could work as a structural brace, providing a stiffer chassis design
  3. The possibility of having the split window be completely transparent, by means of fancy aero-space materials and technologies.  Think electro-transparent panoramic glass, like that featured in the new Maybach’s.

Cons

  1. Rear vision could be blocked, or seriously hindered. This could be solved by having a rear camera installed by the license plate.
  2. It could add a considerable amount to the bottom line of buying a Corvette
  3. It doesn’t represent a drastic leap in styling, is it really going to be worth it?

What Does ₩161,000,000 Buy You?

Spirra Turbo

₩ is the symbol for the Korean Won, their form of the Dollar.  161,000,000 Won sounds like a lot, and it is, roughly equating to $130,000 bucks.  For that, you could by a Corvette ZR1 and a few extra sets of tires.  Or you could buy a tricked out GT-R and mob the streets with all wheel drive prowess.  But now there’s a new option, and it’s price just so happens to be $131K.  They call it the Spirra, and it’s a quick little devil. Using a 2.7-liter V6 Hyundai engine, lifted from a Tiburon, the creator was able to squeeze out 400 horsepower by throwing on a sizable supercharger.  That’s the Spirra S, and for a car that weighs just 2,200 pounds with a full tank of gas, that’s a real nice power-to-weight ratio.  But if it want’s to compete with the aformentioned ZR1 and GT-R, or even Ferrari’s and Lambo’s, it would probably need 25% more to hold it’s own.  So they creators went back to the drawing board and threw on a turbo.  Crank the boost and you net 500 ponies from a car that weights a Keg more than an Elise.

The Spirra Turbo has a top speed in the 200+ MPH range, so you can bet that it will keep up with just about anything. Here’s a video of it dusting an F430.  The racing starts around the 3:35 mark.

Wallpaper of the Week: Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce

Lamborghini Murcielago LP-670-4 SuperVeloce - Front View

I know, I know… last weeks WOTW didn’t make it up on Friday, but that’s because we we wanted to bring you something really special on Monday to brighten up your day… consider this mission accomplished.

It’s hard to find a better example of a Lamborghini than their brand-spanking new Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce.  When compared to the already lightweight LP-640, a 220 lb. weight loss and 487 ft-lbs. of torque helps the SuperVeloce run 0-62MPH in just 3.2 seconds, but it’s the 670 bulls under the hood that make it scream all the way up to 212 MPH (if you have the small spoiler on the trunk, that is).  ‘

The refined, poly-angle design makes it more subtle than the Reventon, but still much more aggressive than the standard Murcielago. The engine cover alone helps transform this beast into an icon as three hexagonal-shaped polymer plates serve as a window into the engine bay, supported by a series of carbon fiber shelves formed specifically to maximize air flow onto the rear spoiler.

I doubt this Murc will be featured at the Lamborghini Academy, so these press photos will have to satisfy your appetite. Enjoy the pics, they should look great on your desktop for the next week or so.  :)

Worst Paint Job Ever

An Underground Garage Would Be Perfect for Hiding Your Exotic Cars, No?

From Honda making everybody listen to the William Tell Overture to someone wrapping their entire car in automotive foil, we’ve had a lot of strange and funny stories come buy our desks and the creativity of some peoples projects are simply amazing.  I don’t know if you can really classify this as creative or just very James Bond-ish, but whatever you want to call it, there’s no denying that it’s cool.
