Group B Rally Racing will Get Your Blood Pumping

It’s Monday and it’s December, a deadly combination.  It’s hard to find the energy, and will power, to get out of bed in the morning.  If you’re still feeling grogy, here’s a vid of some old-school Group B-er’s hitting the dusty trails at 80+ MPH.  Better than your average triple expresso…

10 Minutes of Pure Rally Crashes

I don’t think there’s a better way to kill 10 minutes on a Friday afternoon…

VIDEO: Ken Block’s STi on SnowCat Tracks!!

We’ve seen this before, but only during a brief 15-second clip taken with a cell phone, which really isn’t much to go on.  But now the day has come where Ken Block shows the world his top secret project.  You could say that Ken Block has built the worlds biggest sled, or maybe even that it’s the boldest application of Subaru’s legendary AWD system.  If it were me, I’d call it the ultimate ski lift.

Supposedly, it was the best drift ever…

Looks pretty crazy to me, but I don’t know if it’s as good as Ken Blocks drifting stunts.

Mercedes SLS AMG Runs the ‘Ring

2010 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG

A car that has been largely shrouded in secrecy has just been put to the test on the Nurburgring. The SLS AMG is the next generation of the SLR, featuring aggressive styling cues, gull wing doors, and a brute of an engine. Listen to it roar as it roams the ‘Ring for the full 13 miles. Keep in mind this isn’t the “official” time, this was a preview day. The final production car with a more experienced ‘Ring driver and no co-pilot should yield much faster results.

Top Gear Twist: Porsche Panamera vs. the Postal Service

Lets face it, sometimes the postal service leaves a little to be desired.  They may push through rain, sleet and snow, but I know I’ve waited a couple of weeks for a letter that should have taken 3-4 days.  Sometimes it seems like I could have driven my my aunt’s house and delivered the letter by hand.  Well that’s what Top Gear set out to do in their latest race; they took a Porsche Panamera and pitted it against a postage stamp, watch the videos to find out who wins.

Monster Madness!

We’ve seen some incredible machines as of late; a twin turbo M5 M3, an LS9-powered Camaro, even a 2700 horsepower F150! But this one probably takes the cake as the meanest, fastest street machine around; its a 94 Mustang Cobra powered by a Viper’s 8-liter V10, which is force fed by a couple of T-76 turbos.  Some modification was needed to make everything fit, including moving the firewall back 10 inches and custom fabricating engine mounts and suspension linkages.

This has all taken months of work, but the day has finally come to turn the key.  Listen and enjoy this deep hiss of this Cobra.

Ferrari FXX Runs the Top Gear Test Track

For all the Top Gear fans out there, the last show was a real doozy. Not only did the Top Gear presenters suggest that Michael Schumacher was the Stig, but they actually un-helmeted him on the show. He later ran Ferrari’s FXX around the test track; for those of you who missed the last episode, I won’t spoil it for you, but here’s the video so you can see how slow incredibly fast Schumacher is.

What do you think? Is Shummie the real stig? Is he the only Stig?

Top Gear Now Available for Download on the Xbox 360

Top Gear episodes can be hard to come by here in the states.  If you have a decent cable TV package, you can sometimes catch episodes on the BBC2 network.  Sure you can also scourage the internet in search of that perfect episode; YouTube, Hulu, torrent files, etc.  But if you want a legal way to own copies of the show, then you’re left with fewer options.  It can take forever for the TG crew to release the episodes on DVD.   So why wait?  Enter the Xbox Live Marketplace.  For 160 points, which is about $2 worth, you can own your favorite episodes from seasons 10, 11 & 12.  If you don’t own an Xbox, you can also find episodes of Top Gear on iTunes for about the same price.

The Long Lost Art of Trike Drifting

You know that sweet trike you had when you were around 4 years old. It was your first set of wheels and I’m sure that you, like me, would often stop pedaling and let the plastic wheels skid over the concrete in what only can be described as an awesome drift.  Well a trio of enterprising dudes decided that trikes were still cool and drifting them could be even cooler.

Watch and marvel and their excellent drift skills as they brake-lock the inside wheel to go round corners Tokyo Drift style.

Lionel Regal Hill Climb Video

Here’s a great video that really exemplifies the meaning of speed. This video is of Lionel Regal in his F3000 doing a hill climb of Course de Cote in Mont Ventoux.

Gotta love Quattro!

Lamborghini Academy Redefines Bull Riding

Lamborghini Academy - Gallardo in the Snow

Riding the bull at the local bar is not a bad way to spend $5, but what about $5,000? I guess it depends on the bull you’re riding, and if it’s a Gallardo LP 560-4 or a Murcielago LP 640, it’s probably a pretty good deal.  This is what the head honchos in Italy thought when they recently announced the training dates for the new Lamborghini Academy. For five grand, you get full accommodations and two days on the track at the Vallelunga or Adria Raceway in Italy. You’ll even get a video highlighting your accomplishments at graduation.

They offer three packages: the Track Academy, the Advance Academy and the Winter Academy. Each option will let you get behind the wheel of a Lambo and be instructed how to under-steer, over-steer, drift and pick your line. The Winter Academy looks particularly fun; nothing like trying to control 640 horsepower in the snow.  :)

Press release after the jump.

Pagani Zonda R Runs the Monza Track, Sounds Even Better than it Looks!

Pagani Zonda R at the Monza Race Track

The Zonda R is Pagani’s new hot racer. It’s really a track car, so it should be expected that this thing has functional styling and a mean motor, but I never would have thought that it sounded as goooood as this.  The track that the Zonda is running on, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, is located near Monza, Italy, just north of Milan. Make sure you’re in a place where you can listen to this video at some decent volume, you won’t be disappointed.  :)

Ferrari V4 Motorcycle Concept

ferrari-v4-bike-yellow

This concept wasn’t developed by Ferrari, but rather in hopes that Ferrari would pick it up for production.  It’s been designed in such detail that it is pretty much ready for production; all Ferrari would need to do is design a motor in spec with the size requires set forth in the design and then develop a suspension system to accommodate the weight.  Pretty hot stuff, no? By the way, all the images of this bike are computer generated, hit the jump to see the rest of em.

The Identity of the Stig

top-gear-the-stig

…well, sort of.  The identity of the Stig, Top Gear’s official Power Lap driver, is a closely guarded secret.  So close, in fact, that when the last Stig, Perry McCarthy, publicly revealed his identity, Top Gear killed him off by driving him off an aircraft carrier at 110mph.  Fearing for his life (and probably his job), the Stig’s replacement has made sure to not make the same mistake, closely following the shows guidelines to maintain his anonymity.

But the paparazzi is persistent, to say the least, and there’s been some leaks in Top Gear’s crew.  Not enough information is known to officially put a name on who the Stig really is, but we now know that he is in his 30’s, lives comfortably in a £300,000 home and drives a boring £15,000 car.  It’s been estimated that, between his job with Top Gear and his professional stunt driving gig, the Stig makes about £150,000 per year.

To quote Jeremy Clarkson, I guess the Stig really is a Tame racing driver.  Check out the video after the jump to see the old Stig’s demise.

Nissan GT-R Demo’s Traqmate, Pulls Some Serious G’s

Anyone who doubted the GT-R’s supremacy on the track can take a look at this video.  It was taken on December 29, 2009 during the GT-R track day at Buttonwillow Raceway.  GT-R owner and driver Gary Sheehan takes his Datsun around the raceway hiting up to 1.3 G’s in the turn’s, with a sustained 1.1 G on the back hairpin.  He’s using Traqmate, a track  analysis tool that lets you record your laps with all the metrics that make a real gearhead drool.  Enjoy this video as Gary burns some rubber in a blisteringly fast lap.

Rhys Millen to Attempt a Backflip in a Trophy Truck on New Years Eve

Red Bull rocks.  It’s great for energy, a great mixer if you spend a night out on the town and they seem to have a limitless amount of money to spend on special events.  From the Red Bull Flugtag to the Air Races to this; the Red Bull New Year No Limits showdown.

Rhys fractured 5 vertebrae last year attempting this stunt, but that’s not stopping him from trying it again.  He’s spent the last year figuring out what went wrong (and healing his spine), and he’s now confident that he can pull it off.  The stunt will be performed on New Years Eve in Las Vegas and shown live on ESPN, and in high def on ESPN HD, at 11:00 PM eastern time (8:00 PM pacific).  Robbie Maddison will also be attempting at a 96 foot vertical jump on his dirt bike, so it should make for an interesting New Years Eve, hopefully no one gets hurt this time!

Crap: Subaru is Leaving the WRC

subaru-rally-car-in-greece-2008

Times must be tough if the auto maker who made it’s name competing in the World Rally Championship is dropping out.  Sure, participating in the WRC is expensive, but it’s crucial for two things; R&D and marketing.  Subaru’s philosophy has always been to make safe, reliable cars that were fun to drive.  They incorporated lessons learned from the WRC into every vehicle they made.  Improvements to the engines, braking, handling, chassis structure and more were all derived from their Rally heritage.

It was probably tough for Subaru to bite the bullet on this, but maybe it makes immediate financial sense and will play into a longer-term strategy toward fuel efficiency, something Rally isn’t exactly known for.  As governement regulations get tighter across the board, Auto manufacturers can get pushed into a corner.  I never would have thought Suburu would drop their WRC team, but maybe it’s their only option for long term survival.

Goodbye SWRT and good luck to both Atkinson and Petter, two of my favorite WRC drivers.  Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Pagani Zonda F Roadster on the Top Gear Test Track

As a follow up to yesterday’s Bugatti Veyron post, here’s a clip of the Zonda F Roadster blitzing around Top Gear’s test track. Think it’ll be faster than the Veyron?
