BREAKING: There was No Pelican

In what seems like an uncanny, unpossible chance of coincidence, there were some guys driving parallel to and videotaping the Bugatti when it crashed into the salty marsh.   From the video, it’s clear that the guys recognized the Veyron as being an exotic car, although they weren’t sure what kind it was.  As they were admiring the ulimate super car,  the Bugatti all of a sudden veers to the right and hits the drink!  The driver reported to the authorities that he swerved to miss a low-flying pelican, but I don’t see a pelican, do you?

Bugatti Veyron Misses Hitting a Pelican?

Bugatti Veyron Misses Hitting a Pelican?

But before we reserve judgment, lets review some freeze frames.  You can see there is a small white smudge in front of the Veyron, which could potentially be a Pelican.  However, the original report stated that the driver swerved to miss a low-flying Pelican… this smudge ain’t flying.  Even if the bird wasn’t flying, if a car came so close to it that the driver had to swerve to miss it, you would think that the bird would be startled enough to fly up in the air, at least a few feet, in an act of self preservation.  There are some strange details to the drivers story, but in a grassy-knoll kinda way, I’m not buying the idea that the white smudge is a pelican.

The sleuths over at AutoBlog did some digging around and discovered that the person driving the 16/4 was none other than Andy House, the owner-operator of Performance Auto Sales, the “leader in Exotic Salvage Restoration”.  So far, this doesn’t look good for Andy as it sounds like it was nothing more than a publicity stunt.  Although this notion is unconfirmed, but it is an unthinkable atrocity to crash an exotic car as rare as the Bugatti Veyron for some kind of business gain.  Sounds pretty bad, huh?

Here’s the crash video.  WARNING: EXPLICIT LANGUAGE, NSFW.

Bugatti Veyron Dodges Pelican, Goes for a Swim in Galveston, Texas

Bugatti Veyron in Salt Water - Galveston, Texas

In Galveston, Texas, a local was driving his run-of-the-mill Bugatti Veyron to go prospect some “high-end” land for development.  As the story goes, he was talking on his cell phone when a pelican flew in front of his 16/4, he dropped his phone, swerved to miss the bird,  and hit a patch of mud.  The end result is in the photo above.

Believe it or not, the $1.6 million dollar Veyron comes with a hands-free bluetooth system built in, so I smell something fishy.  Video of it sitting in the salt-water drink after the jump.

Why Do Rally Drivers Need Co-Pilots?

Subaru-Rally-Car

Friends have asked me this question before. They seem to think its as easy as knowing the race course, kinda like F1.  But rally is totally different; the courses are longer, road conditions vary and there are obstacles around every turn, not to mention fans hanging out on the track.

Watch as Irish rally driver Jimmy Deane pushes a Ford Escort MkII to the limits.  Driving instructions come from Barry Meade, the co-driver, whose driving instruction is so overwhelmingly positive, you’d think his day job was being a motivational speaker.

More Details on the Bugatti Galibier 16C

Bugatti Galibier C16

The Galibier isn’t expected to hit the market until 2013, but with an 8-liter W16 engine and $1.5 million dollar price tag, people are already waiting inline for it. A few new details were released today; the W16 is going to be tuned down to around 800 horsepower and the top speed will be limited to around 220 MPH.  Even though this is 30+ MPH less than the Bugatti Veyron, it is still light years ahead of any other 4-door car in the world.  There is also speculation that the 16C will share the same platform as the Bentley Mulsanne.  Stay tuned, more details as they become available!

Ferrari 458 Italia Rocks Our Socks… and then some.

Ferrari 458 Italia Engine

Ferrari is the company that seems to be always teasing.  They tease those who can’t afford their cars, and they tease those who can.  Watch and listen as a pair of 458’s scream around the track at break-neck speeds.

Bugatti Reveals the C16 Galibier

Bugatti Galibier C16

They’ve been teasing us for months now; it all started with dark images of the tail lights and other vehicle accents.  Then an image was leaked out after a private unveiling of the new 4-door saloon. Now Bugatti has released an official video with narration so good, it rivals the Lord of the Rings…

Here’s what we know so far:

  • The engine is now front-mounted and can be run on Ethanol
  • Insane hood with twin-fin mechanisms to display the engine

We’ll keep our ear the ground, check back later for more details!

Porsche Releases Details: 2010 Porsche 911 GT3

2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS - Rear Shot

Hot on the release of the 2010 Porsche 911 is the GT3 RS. This super-tuned version of the GT3 gets the same upgraded 3.8-liter flat-six engine that the 911 inherited from the Carrera, but this version is sans-turbos. Either way, power output is pegged at 450HP, more than enough to make the RS leave blurred streaks of neon through the air. A wider track, custom suspension and light weight body work improve grip, handling and general sex appeal.  Full gallery below, but there’s two track videos after the jump!

Unveiled: 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo

2010 Porsche 911 Turbo - Yellow

Out with the old, in with the new. Although Porsche hasn’t made any real changes to the exterior, it’s whats under the hood (boot?) that counts.  And Porsche delivered for 2010; gone is the peppy 3.6-liter, replaced by the Carrera’s beefier 3.8-liter flat-six.  Not only does the new engine have 5.5% more displacement, but it also features direct-injection, which gives a bump to power and fuel economy. What also gives a bump to power? The twin set of variable-geometry turbines they mounted to the boxer.

Power output has been raised to an incredible 500 ponies, and if you can keep your lead foot in check, you can also expect an EPA-estimated 24.1 MPG with the 6-speed tranny.  If you want to go for the 7-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (aka: dual-clutch) system, you get bumped up to an environmentally-friendly 24.8 MPG.  Being green never felt soooo good.  :)

2010 Porsche 911 Turbo - Gunmetal Cabriolet

What else is new? A refined Porsche Traction Management System (PTMS), a more rear-wheel-biased Porsche Stability Management (PSM) and an optional set of super expensive, super light RS Spyder Rims. The Coupe runs $132,800, but you can expect to pay another $11,000 if you want to sport the convertible.  All this amounts to quite an upgrade for the 911, probably Porsche’s way of pushing back on the GT-R.  Check out the full photo gallery after the jump.

Mercedes SLS AMG Runs the ‘Ring

2010 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG

A car that has been largely shrouded in secrecy has just been put to the test on the Nurburgring. The SLS AMG is the next generation of the SLR, featuring aggressive styling cues, gull wing doors, and a brute of an engine. Listen to it roar as it roams the ‘Ring for the full 13 miles. Keep in mind this isn’t the “official” time, this was a preview day. The final production car with a more experienced ‘Ring driver and no co-pilot should yield much faster results.

2010 Chevy Corvette, Now with more Grand Sport

2010 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport - Red

Great news for those of us who are longing to see the 2010 Corvette: Chevy recently announced to bring back the Corvette Grand Sport for next year. The Z51 performance package will be discontinued and replaced with a Grand Sport model touting Z06 body pieces and some unique performance upgrades.  New bits from the Chevy parts bin will allow for a  greater degree of handling performance; wider wheels and tires, revised shocks, beefier stabilizer bars, new spring specs and tranny-specific gearing will all be included on every Grand Sport model. The new race-bred suspension will give it distinctive, starting grid performance. The new Grand Sport will be offered in both coupe and convertible body styles, available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

Chevrolet puts the same 6.2L LS3 V8 into the new Grand Sport, giving you an extremely capable 430hp to tap into. Some versions will be equipped with a two-mode exhaust, which even raises horsepower from 430hp to 436hp. Chevrolet also announced a 0.2-sec drop in the Grand Sport’s 0-60 mph times. The new 2010 model is equipped with 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels wrapped in super-sticky 275/35ZR18 and 325/30ZR19 tires, front and rear. Want more details? We’ll be back soon with more news and pictures as they become available. If you currently own a Vette and need some replacement parts, you can be sure to find them in our Corvette parts section.

SL65 AMG Black Series does a 4th Gear Dyno Pull

Not bad Mercedes… not bad at all.  This is a long pull, from 35mph in 4th gear all the way up to 190.  It’s pretty incredible to see the kind of torque this engine makes; even at 1,250 rpm’s, it doesn’t take much time for the Black edition to get into it’s power band and when that needle hits 80mph, this thing really starts screaming.  Make sure to turn up your speakers, the sound coming from this engine is pure bliss.

Meet the Mansory Bugatti Veyron Vincerò

Mansory Bugatti Veyron - Drivers Side

Yet another edition of the extremely exclusive Bugatti Veyron has been released, and this is perhaps the most exclusive of all.  The first reason is that this edition isn’t made by Bugatti.  In fact, it’s a German coach builder and tuner by the name of Mansory is responsible for this one.  Mansory is known for their passion for British sports and luxury cars, but I guess they are giving some of their love to their German brethren.  But not too much of their love, as only three Veyron’s will be touched by Mansory’s craftsmen.

Not much is know about the Vincerò yet, except that it isn’t any more powerful than the standard Veyron.  Most of the modifications appear to be visual;  carbon fiber paneling adorns most of the body while polished doors, fenders and mirros provide an elegant two-tone finish.  You’ll probably also notice a V emblem at the bottom of the horseshoe grill,  the branded symbol of the Vincerò.

New 10-spoke alloy wheels finish off the exterior nicely while leather mesh combo dresses up the interior.  All in all, this Veyron should be a little lighter and dare I say, a touch more aerodynamic, which might amount to something on the performance meter.  So if 0-60 MPH in 2.5 seconds isn’t fast enough for you, maybe the Mansory will give you the edge until Bugatti releases the Super Veyron in 2010.  Hit the jump to view the gallery!

Have a Seat in the Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider 16M

Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider 16M - Red

This is the Scuderia Spider 16M. It is Ferrari’s latest and greatest version of their F430, a track-ready convertible which was created to celebrate the 16 titles they won this year as a manufacturer. Why you would ever need a convertible track car is beyond me, but sure, why not?

The Scuderia version of the F430 Spider is 80 kilos lighter and packing 27 extra ponies to give you a little extra kick in pants. Combine that 510HP 4.3-liter V8 engine and sub-3,000 lb curb weight with improved aerodynamics and you get blistering fast acceleration; 0-62 in 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 196 miles per hour. You can check out the full gallery of Scuderia pictures below, or you can find out what it’s like to sit in one by taking a 3D Tour. :)

Top Gear Puts the Bugatti Veyron Around the Test Track

Some pretty fast cars have raced around the Lotus-designed Top Gear Test Track. Being at the top of the Power Lap board is almost as prestigious as have a sub-7:30.0 lap time on the Nurburgring. Last nights episode was a big one with the Pagani Zonda F Roadster managing to shave 6-tenths of a second off of the Zonda F’s lap time! To save you from Google’ing it, here’s an updated list of the top 5 fastest cars to have gone around the TG test track:

  1. 1:17.1 – Gumpert
  2. 1:17.3 – Ascari A10
  3. 1:17.6 – Koeniggsegg CCX (with the Top Gear Wing)
  4. 1:17.8 – Pagani Zonda F Roadster
  5. 1:18.4 – Pagani Zonda F

But the Zonda wasn’t the only car the Stig got to drive on last nights episode of Top Gear. He also got to put his foot down in the Bugatti Veyron. Where do you think the Veyron will finish? It’s a pretty heavy car, will it even be in the top 5 or can the 1,000 horsepower on tap overcome it’s handling limitations to let it claim it’s thrown at the top of the Power Board? Make a guess before you watch the video!

Sports Cars and Super Cars from SEMA 2008

Now that SEMA is officially over, our AutoAnything crew has returned home to the nest.  But they didn’t come back empty handed.  Our photography buffs were able to get some great shots at SEMA this year.  This first post includes photos of both super cars and sports cars alike, from the Subaru STi to the Ferrari California, from an old school Pontiac GTO to the new school Audi R8.  There’s more photos on the way, so stay tuned!

Corvette ZR1 Knocked Four Seconds Off its Lap Time Around the Ring!

We all know that the Corvette ZR1 is a beast, and today it has proved itself yet again.  Jan Magnussen was at the wheel in the ZR1 this time and 73 turns later he was able to knock 4 seconds off the ZR1’s previous time of 7:26.4.

The new time of 7:22.4 seconds is fast.  Really really fast, but it’s still .3 seconds behind Dodge’s best run in their Viper ACR.  To be honest, these times should all be considered unofficial until the top manufacturers get together at the ‘Ring on the same day and run their cars at the same time in similar weather conditions.  Then we’ll really have something to compare the cars against and nobody can call foul on using modified cars and upgraded tires.  Porsche, I’m looking in your direction.

Stay tuned, I’m sure GM will be releasing the video soon!

Ferrari F430 Replacement to be Turbocharged and Lighter Weight

The F430 has been one of Ferrari’s top selling models for several years now.  Although it still looks like one of the best supercars on the street, it is due for replacement.  Codenamed the F142, the 430’s successor will be even lighter than the current Scuderia version which weighs a scant 2,750 pounds.  Some of that weight will be shed from the engine by moving to a smaller V8 than the current 4.3-liter.  To make up for the loss of displacement, Ferrari will probably be turbocharging the new model to give it that extra boost and maintain peak performance. It also seems likely that the F142 will look similar to Ferrari’s Mille Chilli concept, pictured above.

Ferrari’s goal to reduce emissions by 40% by 2012 is, to say the least, very admirable.  Using lighter materials and smaller engines is one logical step for the Italian car maker, so you can expect to see similar treatments across the Ferrari lineup in the future.

An Underground Garage Would Be Perfect for Hiding Your Exotic Cars, No?

From Honda making everybody listen to the William Tell Overture to someone wrapping their entire car in automotive foil, we’ve had a lot of strange and funny stories come buy our desks and the creativity of some peoples projects are simply amazing.  I don’t know if you can really classify this as creative or just very James Bond-ish, but whatever you want to call it, there’s no denying that it’s cool.

Next Season of Top Gear to Start November 2, 2008: Brought to you by AutoAnything

Tickets for Top Gear’s studio audience are currently being sold for Wednesday, October 29th.  This would be for the first episode of Top Gear’s new season, which would indicate that the first episode should air on Sunday, November 2nd.  Can’t wait to see what trio has in store for us.

Sneak Peak: Judging by the photos I’ve seen, there will be a shootout between Chevy’s ZR1, the Dodge Challenger and Cadillac’s CTS-V.  Whether that will be featured in the first episode or not will remain to be seen, but it’s definitely in the works.
