This weekend, June 14th and 15th, is the 24 Heures du Mans race. Started in 1923, this year marks the 85th anniversary of the 24-hour long race near Le Mans, France. Le Mans is the ultimate endurance test, which Audi has practically dominated for the last eight years. However, Peugeot is setting the pace at qualifying laps this year in their diesel-powered 908. Peugeot cars not only hold the top three spots with lap times of 3:18.513, 3:18.682, and 3:20.451, but those times are also the fastest lap times ever to be recorded at Le Mans!
Not far behind is Audi in the 4th and 5th place spots, running their best times of 3:23.847 and 3:24.287. Coincidently, those times also beat the old “Fastest Lap” record, but Peugeot ultimately takes that honor away from Audi. Although Peugeot is running faster times, Le Mans is an endurance race and you only have a chance of winning if you actually finish the race. If you don’t follow the race this weekend, make sure to check back next week for the highlights and final standings.
