Choosing the Onboard Air System That’s Best for You

If you drive in a variety of conditions – off road in hard-pack, off road in dunes, highway travel, etc. – then you’re probably constantly tampering with the air levels of your tires. While it’s easy to let some air out of the tires, putting air back in can be a bit more challenging unless you’re equipped with a high-quality onboard air system. There are several onboard air systems that will get the job done, but when choosing one, you need to make sure it will work with your size tires and perform to your standards. Here are some specs on some of the top-selling models to help make your decision easier.

VIAIR Onboard Systems:

Medium-Duty Onboard Air System: VIAIR 10003

This is an entry-level system that can handle the job of filling tires up to 33”. It uses a 325C VIAIR compressor with a 33% duty cycle @ 100 psi, 19-amp draw and 150 psi max working pressure.

Heavy-Duty Onboard Air System: VIAIR 1005

A step up from the Medium-Duty, the Heavy-Duty kit works faster and can fill tires up to 35”. It uses a 400C VIAIR compressor with a 33% duty cycle @ 100 psi, 29 amp draw, a 150 psi maximum pressure, and a quick 2.54 cfm flow @ zero psi head pressure.

Constant-Duty Onboard Air System: VIAIR 10007

For VIAIR’s most versatile and longest-running system that can handle tires up to 37”, you’d want to choose the Constant-Duty. This kit uses a 450C VIAIR compressor with a 100% duty cycle @ 100 psi, 19 amp draw and 150 psi maximum pressure.

X’treme Duty Onboard Air System: VIAIR 10009

For a super fast fill, the X’treme Duty quickly fills tires up to 37” and its dual compressors provide a lightening-fast refresh rate. It uses a 350C VIAIR compressor with a 100% duty cycle and 2.68 CFM so it can even run air tools on demand.

Constant-Duty Onboard Air System: VIAIR 20001

For tires that are 37” or larger, you’ll need the Constant-Duty. It uses a 480C Chrome 200 PSI VIAIR compressor with a 200 psi maximum working pressure.

Once you choose the onboard air system that works best for you, you’ll want to purchase an Onboard Air Hookup Kit (VIAIR 20052) to sync your air compressor to your air tank and enable in-cab control.
